The Night-Blooming Cereus from Thornton's New Illustration of the Sexual System of Corolus Von Linnaeus, 1807.
Robert John Thornton (1768–1837) was an English physician and botanical writer, noted for Thornton's New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus (1797-1807) and The British Flora (1812). Around 800 copies of 'New Illustration' were produced, each containing 31 plates by different artists, accompanied by inspirational poetry and explanatory notes covering flower lore and legend. Robert invested heavily in the book, but it was a financial failure, and he died penniless.
