Black Point, Colonel Henry Huttleston Rogers, Jr., Gin Lane and Old Town Road, Southampton, New York, wall fountain, by Frances Benjamin Johnston, 1915.
Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864–1952) was one of the earliest American female photographers. Frances was appointed as official White House photographer for the Harrison, Cleveland, McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft presidential administrations. She took the last portrait of President William McKinley in 1901, just before he was assassinated.
With her partner (romantic and business), Mattie Edwards Hewitt, a successful freelance home and garden photographer, Frances opened a studio in New York in 1913 and made a good business in photographing architectural sites and gardens.
She was named an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects for her work in preserving old and endangered buildings. Her collections have been purchased by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
