'Arcady,' George Owen Knapp house, Sycamore Canyon Road, Montecito, California. Lower garden, indoor swimming pool at pool house. By Frances Benjamin Johnston, photographer.
Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864–1952) was one of the first female press photographers in the U.S. and an official White House photographer for the Harrison, Cleveland, McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft presidential administrations.
She photographed events such as world's fairs and peace-treaty signings. Johnston took the last portrait of President William McKinley just before he was assassinated.
With her partner (romantic and business), Mattie Edwards Hewitt, a successful freelance home and garden photographer, Frances opened a studio in New York in 1913 and made a good business in photographing architectural sites and gardens. She was named an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects for her work in preserving old and endangered buildings. Her collections have been purchased by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
